St. Louis - Following a spirited debate with Senator Joe Biden, Republican Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin was asked by her advisers about her repeated references to Senator John McCain as "the maverick." According to unnamed sources, the Alaska Governor replied, saying "Isn't that what they called him when he was flyin' all those planes? It's too bad about his friend Iceman, though, God bless him."
Flustered aides quickly informed Governor Palin that "Top Gun" was a fictional film, not a biography of Senator McCain. Though both Senator McCain and Lt. Pete "Maverick" Mitchell are naval aviators, John McCain flew A-4 Skyhawks during the Vietnam War while Lt. Mitchell flew F-14s.
After a few seconds with a blank look on her face, Governor Palin replied saying "Well isn't that great! I'll betcha "Maverick" wishes he could meet the real Maverick, John McCain! Could you send him an invitation?"
