In a surprising twist, Mark McKinnon - chief media adviser to Senator John McCain - told Michele Norris on All Things Considered that he won't stay with the McCain campaign if Sen. Barack Obama is the Democratic nominee.

    I'm surprised he allowed him to be associated with his campaign, knowing that something might happen, which is what did.
    It's just pretty damning when someone that close to your campaign not only leave.. not only supports the other guy, but is willing to say so in public. Freaken amazing.

    McCain wasn't in much of a place to choose his staff in the summer of '07. He was lucky he could afford those who stayed on. Besides, with Hillary being the presumptive nominee, this was likely expected to be a non-issue.
