2008 Democratic Polling - The Deafening Silence

Since Hillary Clinton's gaffe over drivers' licenses for illegal immigrants at the October 30th MSNBC debate, the mainstream media has followed and reported on the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire very closely, chronicling the simultaneous rise and fall of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton respectively.

In recent weeks, polls indicate that Senator Obama has closed the gap, and certain polls even give him the advantage in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. However, just as Senator Obama took the lead in these states, reporting on the polls in these locations, by the same institutions who had been following the race so closely, has gone silent.

I make no pretense of or apology for my support of Senator Obama. I just find it curious that the media has gone quiet at this critical time in the Democratic campaign. The cynic in me wants to suggest that it's the mainstream media trying to take the wind out of the upstart Obama's sails, and help their "chosen one" before he can do any more damage to her air of inevitability. Then again, it could just be the media adjusting to this unforseen turn of events.

Either way, I want to know how things are going. Has Obama's rise in the polls continued, or has he stalled? What are some good, unbiased sites that will provide the unvarnished truth on this race?

Thanks...normally, I do so. I don't know why I didn't think of it this time.

I don't think Obama every got media attention of his own. Hillary gets media for being Hillary, Obama gets media when it's vs. Hillary. The only thing close to media attention Obama got without Hillary was with Oprha.

Whether it's good news or bad news it's all about Hillary. To paraphrase Jan Brady:
"It's all about Hillary. Hillary, Hillary, Hillary."

I dunno about that. Obama's had the "rockstar" label for most of a year now. I think he gets coverage, but not the amount that Hillary gets as a former first lady/frontrunner.

They're more interested in slandering the GOP ;-)

Seriously though, from what I've seen, it's not that bad. Obama's been getting a good amount of press recently. From what I saw.

I think he's been getting press, but it seemed like all talk of the polls in the early states disappeared when Obama started taking the lead. Odd that the first one I saw on CNN was about how Hillary re-took the lead, none about Obama taking/maintaining the lead when he did.

Yeah, yeah I know CNN is no bastion of journalism, but there's a lot worse out there too.

Takes a while to conduct polls.....I don't think they've gone silent on purpose - usually you see polls coming out at the end of the week - data is easier to collect during the week b/c people are home.

I always check wikipedia, which usually compiles the polls by state pretty well.

In my view the silence is due to Obama's fall backwards in the polls. An article I posted, and a much larger one, are tracking what I believe to be persistent bias by the media in Obama's favor. When the polls reverse against Obama, reporting dies or is much more selective.
